Dia De Los Muertos- Calaveras Sugar Skulls

5th grade students are creating Dia De Los Muertos Calaveras Sugar Skulls!  I am always very impressed with these art pieces when they are complete.

Students discussed the Mexican celebration and built an understanding of the reasons why it's important to learn about different cultures and their art.  Students demonstrate an understanding of the culture from learning about the art they create!  Some students were able to share personal connections about Day of The Dead, and discuss their family traditions.

Students were able to identify the detailed designs in the sugar skulls and use those features to create their own.  Swirls, stitches, and flowers were some of the few details that students added to create their skull.

They used pencils, sharpies, and finally vibrant watercolors to paint.
This is one of my favorite projects!
